Aboitiz InfraCapital Water Strengthens Davao’s Economy Through Bulk Water Supply Project

The Aboitiz InfraCapital subsidiary Apo Agua Infrastructura, Inc., in partnership with the Davao City Water District (DCWD), continues to deliver significant social and economic benefits through the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project (DCBWSP). This initiative is ensuring water security and improving living standards for over one million residents in Davao City.

Before AIC Water’s involvement, only 77% of DCWD’s customers had round-the-clock access to potable water. Today, thanks to the operations of the DCBWSP, 96% of households now enjoy 24/7 water supply.

As the country’s largest operating bulk water facility, the project currently provides 300 million litres per day (MLD). According to an independent study by Ateneo de Davao University, the project has generated more than PHP 15.5 billion in investments and contributed PHP 188 million in government tax revenues for the city in 2024 alone.

“For over 10 years now, AIC Water has been continuously committed to our goal of enabling businesses and uplifting communities across the Philippines through sustainable water solutions,” said Cosette V. Canilao, President and CEO of AIC.

The study further highlighted PHP 1.1 billion in gross revenue and substantial contributions to Davao City’s regional GDP. Ramon Aboitiz Tuason, Assistant Vice President for Operations at AIC, noted that the DCBWSP demonstrates the positive role of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in delivering sustainable community benefits.

Looking ahead, AIC is preparing to replicate this success in Iloilo with a proposed PHP 5.12 billion bulk water project. The Iloilo City Bulk Water Supply Project aims to provide 86 MLD of potable water through another PPP model.

With a total portfolio of 320 MLD, AIC Water operates the Philippines’ largest bulk water treatment facility in Davao, manages end-to-end water and wastewater services for its Economic Estates, and holds a strategic stake in Balibago Waterworks, the nation’s fourth-largest water concessionaire.

Memsift Innovations Partners with Singapore Institute of Technology to Pioneer Nanofiltration Membranes for Chemical Recovery

Memsift Innovations Pte Ltd has announced a pioneering research collaboration with the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) to develop innovative chemical-resistant hollow fibre nanofiltration (NF) membranes. These advanced membranes are designed to recover valuable chemicals from spent acids and bases in liquid-waste produced by the microelectronics and semiconductor industries, offering a sustainable alternative to existing practices.

The semiconductor industry, a cornerstone of modern technology, faces significant environmental challenges due to its intensive use of water and chemicals. Wastewater generated from semiconductor manufacturing processes is often laden with high concentrations of spent acids, bases, and heavy metals, making treatment both technically complex and financially burdensome. Current solutions, such as neutralization and incineration, are energy-intensive and environmentally damaging, creating an urgent need for more sustainable alternatives, especially as global regulations tighten.

“The collaboration between Memsift and SIT addresses the urgent need for innovative liquid-waste treatment solutions that prioritize sustainability and circular economy principles,” said Dr. J Antony Prince, the founder and CEO of Memsift Innovations.

This partnership focuses on developing a new generation of NF membranes with enhanced chemical resistance, selective permeability, and robust performance. Advanced materials such as functionalized graphene and hybrid organic-inorganic nanomaterials will be utilized to ensure the membranes can withstand the harsh chemical environments found in semiconductor wastewater. The membranes are tailored to recover over 90% of valuable chemicals, such as those used in stripping baths for removing photoresist and organic residues from wafers. The performance of these membranes will be optimized through cutting-edge characterization techniques and tested rigorously with real industrial wastewater. The technology will also undergo an onsite demonstration at a global microelectronics manufacturing facility in Singapore by the end of 2025.

The adoption of these NF membranes is expected to significantly reduce the volume of waste requiring downstream treatment and disposal, delivering tangible benefits such as lower operational costs, minimized energy consumption, and a reduced environmental footprint. Beyond the semiconductor sector, these membranes hold potential for broader industrial applications where resource recovery from high-strength wastewater streams is essential.

SIT will contribute its expertise in membrane design, formation and fabrication, along with property characterization and performance analysis. This complements Memsift’s industrial experience and intellectual property (IP) in advanced membrane technologies, creating a strong synergy for the development and optimization of advanced nanofiltration membranes. This exemplifies the impactful interplay between academia and industry to address an important problem in waste management.

Furthermore, SIT students will gain invaluable hands-on experience through this partnership, preparing them for future roles in sustainable engineering. At least three students from the Pharmaceutical Engineering and Chemical Engineering degree programmes will be involved in polymer processing, membrane fabrication, filtration equipment operation, and process analytical techniques.

“This partnership showcases SIT’s deep expertise in membrane technology and commitment to sustainability and innovation. By combining our research capabilities with Memsift’s industry experience, we are developing advanced solutions for high-value manufacturing sectors, while equipping students with hands-on skills to drive real-world impact,” said Associate Professor Zuo Jian, the principal investigator leading the research team from SIT.

This initiative reinforces Memsift Innovations’ position as an emerging player in sustainable water management technologies. bNovate Technologies’ new distribution partnership to help address water crisis in Malaysia

bNovate Technologies, a groundbreaker in innovative water monitoring solutions, has announced a new strategic partnership with Greenson Technology Sdn. Bhd., a leading environmental solutions provider in Malaysia.

This exclusive agreement marks bNovate’s second major partnership in Asia, focusing on enhancing the quality and efficiency of water utilities across Malaysia. The partnership aligns with Malaysia’s growing need to address water scarcity and management challenges, which experts predict could lead to a nationwide crisis by 2030 if left unaddressed.

Under the terms of the agreement, Greenson Technology, led by Director Carson Chong, will serve as the exclusive distributor of bNovate’s cutting-edge water monitoring solutions within Malaysia’s utility sector. This collaboration represents a significant step in bNovate’s strategy to expand its footprint in Asia following the success of its initial partnership with MattenPlant in the region. The partnership is poised to provide Malaysian utilities with the necessary tools to combat the country’s pressing water management issues, especially climate pressures and infrastructure challenges.

Tackling Malaysia’s water issues

Malaysia has been grappling with severe water management challenges, leading to significant financial and resource losses. Between 2018 and 2022, the country lost an estimated US$1.7 billion due to wasted water, exacerbating the financial strain on an already stressed infrastructure. The combination of a perceived low cost of water and increasing climate-related pressures has heightened the risk of a water crisis by 2030, as noted by local officials. The imbalance in water supply across states, coupled with outdated infrastructure, further complicates the situation, with some regions facing potential water shortages during dry seasons.

Malaysia’s water infrastructure is at a critical juncture,” said Carson Chong, Director of Greenson Technology.

“The inefficiencies in the current system are not just local issues but national concerns that could hinder our country’s development if not addressed promptly. Our partnership with bNovate Technologies is a crucial step toward equipping Malaysian utilities with the advanced tools to monitor, manage, and improve water quality and distribution. We are confident this collaboration will substantially benefit the Malaysian public and help mitigate the impending water crisis.”

The dam area covers 2,226.44 Ha which can accommodate up to 314,7 million cubic meters of raw water. It also can irrigate 22,000 hectares of rice fields providing 13.9 cubic meters per second of raw water for irrigation, public water necessities and industrial needs. Karian Dam is a crucial infrastructure for the area. “The Karian Dam is one of Indonesia’s biggest dams,” said Joko Widodo, the Indonesian President at the inauguration ceremony in Banten. This project, which required a public investment of IDR 2.27 trillion (US$ 146 million), is not just about size, it is a key to a sustainable future for the region.

An efficient data collection
One of the key challenges faced during the implementation of the Karian Dam project was the need for significant data collection. PcVue was chosen by the engineering company for its user-friendliness and flexibility. Mr. Satrio, director at PT Sartika Mitrasejati, noted that “PcVue was easier to use than other products” highlighting the software’s intuitive interface and cutting-edge features. PcVue software allows the team to supervise the dam’s water flow and integrate multiple subsystems in a single platform. The real challenge was to be able to collect data despite the great distance covered along the river. PcVue’s adaptability and scalability were pivotal in overcoming this challenge.

A helpful technical support
Mr. Satrio mentioned, “PcVue’ support team was very accommodating and ensured that all our requests were met.” highlighting the team’s dedication to providing quick and efficient technical support.

Many interfaces with other products
The successful implementation of the dam project relied on tailored features to meet the unique demands of its infrastructure. PcVue was interfaced with various other systems thus improving the operational efficiency of the dam as it provides a consolidated information platform for the operator:

– Remote monitoring through WebVue platform;
– Complete reporting using Dream Report;
– Integration of 8 CCTV cameras using Onvif protocol to confirm critical water level alarms visually;

A project with not only economic but also social impact
As the largest dam in Indonesia, the Karian Dam project is not just about breaking records, it’s about making a real difference in people’s lives. Although the project is still expanding with the addition of several telemetric stations, the dam is already changing lives. Not only boosting the region’s agriculture efficiency but also serving as a vital tool to prevent floods.

This project also helps on a global scale. Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, faces a significant challenge as it continues to sink at an alarming rate. This subsidence, primarily caused by excessive groundwater extraction, threatens the city’s infrastructure and more importantly, the well-being of its inhabitants. The Karian Dam presents a crucial solution to this problem by providing a new and reliable source of water thus reducing the city’s dependency on groundwater, the dam helps mitigate the subsidence issue. The Karian dam is therefore not only a vital infrastructure project for water management and agricultural efficiency, but also a key player in meeting Indonesia’s environmental and societal challenges.

PcVue is proud to play a pivotal role in a project helping communities on such a large scale.
