WaterSurplus, a leader in sustainable water treatment, offers a line of high-performance catalytic filter media designed to remove tough contaminants from groundwater more effectively and affordably. Cost-competitive, long-lasting, and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 certified, these products include OxiPlus12™ and OxiPlus75™.

The latest addition to this media line is OxiPlus12, a U.S.-made catalytic filter media certified to meet NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 standards for safe drinking water. It significantly reduces contaminants such as iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, arsenic, and radium from groundwater—and does so with great efficiency, surpassing many traditional methods.

OxiPlus12 features a durable silica sand core coated with 12% manganese dioxide, more than the level found in competing products. This enhanced coating accelerates chemical reactions needed to turn dissolved iron and manganese into particles that can be easily filtered out. Unlike conventional systems that require large, costly tanks and extended contact times with oxidizing chemicals, OxiPlus12 enables faster reactions and smaller system footprints—making it ideal for upgrades or retrofits.

“OxiPlus12 is a game-changer for communities looking to upgrade their water treatment systems,” said Jim Groose, Senior Vice President of Municipal Water Treatment at WaterSurplus. “It helps speed up the natural process of making contaminants filterable, which results in cleaner water and longer system runtimes.”

Certified for flow rates of 2–8 gallons per minute per square foot, OxiPlus12 works well in both vertical and horizontal filters, as well as gravity systems. It is Buy America Build America Act (BABAA) certified, making it suitable for federally funded infrastructure projects.

Complete Support for Municipal and Industrial Needs

With more than 100 installations already in place, OxiPlus12 offers proven efficiency for a wide variety of applications and industries. The company supports customers with a full range of services utilizing OxiPlus12, including media replacements, inspections, equipment replacement and rentals, pilot testing, and custom groundwater treatment for arsenic, radium, hydrogen sulfide, iron, manganese, and PFAS.

“An ideal choice for retrofitting existing sand/anthracite and greensand filtration systems, OxiPlus12 is helping municipalities and industries across the country meet rising water quality standards—efficiently and affordably,” added Groose.

Proven in the Field: City of Delano, MN

The City of Delano recently upgraded its water treatment system in two phases using OxiPlus12 media. Before the switch, the city used a traditional Greensand Plus™ media, which removed manganese down to an average of 0.058 mg/L.  After converting all filters to OxiPlus12, manganese levels dropped further—to just 0.036 mg/L—a 38% improvement and well below the recommended limit of 0.050 mg/L.

By switching to OxiPlus12, Delano improved treatment results and system efficiency without having to build entirely new infrastructure,” Groose noted.

Meeting Specialized Needs

For specialized applications, WaterSurplus also offers OxiPlus75, an ultra-efficient catalytic media optimized for use in WaterPlus pre-engineered filtration systems. OxiPlus75 is a natural pyrolusite mineral that consists of approximately 75% manganese dioxide by weight. Mined and then crushed to a 20 x 40 mesh, this NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 certified media is suitable for use in drinking water treatment applications. Typical loading rates are 6-10 gpm/sq ft, with some plants being designed up to 15 gpm/sq ft. OxiPlus75 is particularly useful for the removal of iron, manganese, arsenic, hydrogen sulfide, and radium. In order to maintain efficient reaction rates, sodium hypochlorite is typically chosen as a chemical feed to keep the media in its oxidized state. A hydrous manganese oxide (HMO) feed is required in order to remove radium specifically. Like OxiPlus12, OxiPlus75 is BABAA compliant.
